The Zamfara State Government has declared a one-week public holiday to enable public and civil servants register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards.

The decision which was announced in a statement released from the State's Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Dosara noted that the holiday starts on Monday 19th of June, 2022.

The statement reads, "All Commissioners, Special advisers, Permanent secretaries, other public office holders, party officials and traditional rulers are directed to monitor and supervise the ongoing voters registration exercise to ensure that all eligible voters within their wards and local governments register and obtain their PVC to enable them to exercise their fundamental rights and civic responsibilities in all the forthcoming elections."

The development is coming barely a week after YvoteNaija, a civil society, urged the Federal Government to declare a public holiday for voters registration.

Speaking in a new conference made, Mr. Abideen Olasupo on behalf of Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on 13th of June, 2022, made it known that the group's call for public holiday is very necessary.

"We call on the federal Government to declare a public holiday as a national day of action to encourage people to get registered."

"We urge private organisations to give days off to employees to find time and register or even facilitate their logistics from the office of the nearest registration centers."

Olasupo also said that the group also called on the citizens to sustain the level of interest and participation beyond the CVR exercise to all other activities in the coming elections.
